Dear Friends
Please find the introduction written by Mar Greaves:
This week I was checking Sunday’s Gospel reading and the phrase that struck me was about “paying lip service,” that is, offering insincere praise or agreement without genuine commitment. Whether it’s in politics, business, or personal relationships, many of us have encountered situations where words and actions don’t align. It is often used to placate others, maintain appearances, or avoid conflict. At its core, paying lip service is about maintaining a facade. It’s a form of dishonesty that prioritises appearances over authenticity. It creates a disconnect between what is said and what is done, eroding trust and undermining genuine relationships.
The teachings of Jesus challenge us to examine our own lives and consider where we might be guilty of paying lip service, whether in our faith, our relationships, or our professional lives. Are there areas where our words do not match our actions? Are we honouring commitments genuinely, or merely offering them to appease others?
Jesus in his teachings emphasised that true worship is not just about outward expression, such as reciting prayers or following rituals, (important as this might be), but is about a sincere commitment that flows from the heart. Jesus words serve as a powerful reminder that God values authenticity over empty rituals. Through his teaching, we are reminded of the importance of sincerity, and the need to align our words with our actions. By rejecting superficial expressions and embracing authenticity, we can create a more honest, trustworthy, and spiritually enriched life, honouring both ourselves and the values we claim to uphold.
Can you believe it’s September already…doesn’t time fly when your having fun!
