The 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Loose garments…

 Dear Friends

Please enjoy the meditation from Mary Greaves

Last week something really annoyed me (I’m not a saint!), and I was telling my friend about it and she told that when she gets uptight about something she remembers the quote, attributed to St Francis of Assisi, “ Wear the world like a loose garment, which touches us in a few places and there lightly.”  I have since thought about this and what it might mean for each one of us in today’s world.

I think that when we place the quote in a modern context, it takes on a new relevance and it offers us valuable insights into how we can navigate the complexities of our super busy lives with a more balanced, mindful and fulfilling perspective on life. It encourages us to rise above the superficial and transient aspects of contemporary society and focus on our well-being, our relationships, and our impact on the world. Even amidst the hustle and bustle of today’s world, the wisdom offered by St Francis’ words is there to guide us towards an inner peace and a deeper sense of purpose.

So how do I wear a “loose garment” in my life? I think essentially it means that I should not become overly attached or entangled in the material and worldly aspects of life. I need, at least to try, and approach life with a certain amount of detachment, not letting the concerns and trouble of the world (large or small), weigh me down. Not that I am advocating isolating myself from the world or neglecting my responsibilities, but rather, finding a balance between engaging with the world, all the while striving to maintain a sense of inner calm and a deeper connection with the environment and the people around me.

Maybe take time this week to find time for yourself to reflect and focus on something that you enjoy away from the ‘busyness” of daily life.
